How to use it

Start with the left and right buttons above — each plays a short tone through one speaker only, so you can confirm both sides are actually working and wired to the correct channel. That matters more than people expect: a swapped channel or a dead speaker on a soundbar or desktop pair is easy to miss until you're testing on purpose.

From there, play the continuous balance tone and nudge the slider left or right until the sound feels dead-center between your speakers. Then run through bass, mid and treble to check each range sounds clean, and finish with the rattle-check pulse — a louder low tone that's the fastest way to expose a loose panel, a buzzing enclosure, or a driver that's starting to go.

What to actually listen for

Don't just ask "does this sound fine" — listen for specific problems instead. On the channel test: does sound come from the correct speaker, with nothing leaking from the other side? On balance: does the tone genuinely sit in the middle, or does it drift toward one speaker even with the slider centered? On bass, mid and treble: any buzzing, rattling or muddiness that isn't part of a clean tone? Each of those points to a different cause, so narrowing down which one you've got is the real first step before assuming the speaker itself is broken.

Check the Hardware

Before blaming the speaker, inspect the physical chain — try a different cable, swap USB or 3.5 mm ports, and plug directly into the device rather than through a hub or extension. A faulty jack or worn cable causes more "broken speaker" reports than actual blown drivers.

Check Your Audio Driver

An outdated or corrupted audio driver can cause crackling, silence, or one-sided output that has nothing to do with the speaker itself. Open Device Manager, find your audio adapter, and update or roll back the driver — then retest. On Windows, also confirm the correct output device is set as Default in Sound settings.

One Side Silent or Much Quieter

Check your OS sound settings first — after plugging in a new speaker or Bluetooth pair, the wrong output device or a skewed balance setting is a common culprit. Also check any physical volume dial on the speaker and make sure both channel cables are fully seated.

Buzzing or Rattling on Bass Tones

Usually a loose grille, nearby object, or panel vibrating in sympathy — not the driver itself. Move the speaker away from glass or shelves and test again. If the buzz follows the speaker to a clear surface, that points to the driver or enclosure instead.

Sound is Muffled or Lacks Detail

Small speakers have range limits — that's hardware, not a fault. But if a speaker that used to sound clear suddenly sounds muffled, check for a torn driver surround or dust and debris blocking the port. A quick clean often restores clarity.

Bluetooth Cuts Out or Distorts at Distance

Almost always a connection or interference issue rather than a speaker fault. Move closer to your source device, clear obstacles between them, and reduce competing Bluetooth traffic nearby before assuming the speaker is damaged.

A few quick questions

Does this work with laptop and phone speakers, not just external ones?

Yes. Anything your device treats as an audio output — built-in laptop speakers, phone speakers, a desktop 2.1 set, a soundbar, or a Bluetooth speaker — will work the same way, since this page just plays sound through whatever your system currently has selected as its default output.

My device only has one speaker — how do I use the left/right test?

On a single-speaker device the left and right buttons will sound the same, since there's only one physical driver to reproduce both channels. In that case, the balance and rattle-check sections are more useful — they'll still tell you whether that one speaker is clean and rattle-free.

Can I use this to test a soundbar or Bluetooth speaker before returning it?

That's exactly what it's built for. Run through channels, balance and the rattle-check pulse, and if anything sounds off, you've got a concrete reason to return it within your store's window rather than a vague "something feels wrong."

Why does the rattle-check pulse sound louder than the other tests?

That's intentional. Buzzing, rattling and blown-driver issues often only show up under more demanding bass output — a quiet tone can sound perfectly clean on a speaker that distorts noticeably once you push it. Keep an eye on your volume before playing it.

Does this work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, it runs fine in mobile browsers like Chrome or Safari. You'll get the same tones and controls as on desktop, playing through whatever speaker or output the device currently has active.

How do I confirm my speakers are fully working and not just partially damaged?

Run all three tests in order — left/right channel, balance sweep, and the rattle-check pulse. A fully healthy speaker passes all three cleanly: each channel plays at equal volume, the balance sweep sounds smooth from side to side with no drop-outs, and the rattle-check produces a deep clean thump with no buzzing or distortion. If any one test flags an issue, that narrows down exactly where the problem sits rather than leaving you guessing.

My speaker sounds fine at low volume but distorts when I turn it up — is it blown?

Not necessarily. Distortion under load is common on budget speakers and doesn't always mean a blown driver — sometimes it's just the limits of a small enclosure or underpowered amplifier being pushed past its comfortable range. Try the rattle-check test at a moderate volume: if it sounds clean there but distorts only at high volume, the speaker is likely intact but reaching its physical ceiling. A genuinely blown driver usually distorts even at low-to-mid volumes.

Can I use this page to compare two pairs of speakers side by side?

Yes — run the full test sequence on the first pair, note the results, then switch your default audio output in your OS settings and run the same tests on the second pair. Since every tone is generated fresh each time you press play, you're hearing a consistent reference signal on both, which makes the comparison fair. The left/right and balance tests are especially useful for spotting differences in stereo imaging between two sets.
