Does this work with earphones and earbuds, or only headphones?
Both, and wired vs. Bluetooth makes no difference either. Every test here is just an audio signal your device plays back — a pair of earbuds, wired earphones from a phone box, in-ear monitors, or a full-size over-ear headphone will all work the same way. The only thing that changes between devices is how they actually sound, which is exactly what you're here to find out.
Do I need to install an app or browser plugin?
No. Everything runs live in the browser tab you're reading this in right now, using tones generated on the spot rather than pre-recorded audio files. Close the tab and nothing stays behind — no background process, no notification permissions, nothing to uninstall later.
Why does it ask me to calibrate my volume first?
Two reasons. First, safety — jumping straight into a frequency sweep or the distortion test at whatever volume your last video left you at is a good way to end up wincing. Second, fairness — if your volume is too low, tones you'd otherwise hear fine, especially bass, can seem "broken" when your headphones are actually fine. Calibrating first gives every later test a comfortable, consistent baseline to work from.
One test came back with an issue — does that mean my headphones are broken?
Not necessarily, so don't start a return before digging a little deeper. A "distortion detected" result on a loud low tone, for example, is common on cheap earbuds and doesn't always mean a blown driver — sometimes it's just how a small speaker behaves under load. Try the same test at a slightly lower volume, or on a different device, before deciding something's actually faulty. Treat the results as a strong hint, not a repair shop diagnosis.
I couldn't hear the highest or lowest frequency in the sweep — is that normal?
Usually, yes. Human hearing is commonly cited as running from 20Hz to 20,000Hz, but that's really only true for young ears in ideal conditions — by your thirties, the top end has often quietly dropped to somewhere around 15–16kHz, and that's normal aging, not damage. On top of that, small speakers and laptop or phone audio hardware often can't reproduce the very bottom of the bass range cleanly either. If a friend with younger ears also can't hear it on the same headphones, that points more to a device limit than your own hearing.
Do you store or upload my microphone recording or test results?
No. The mic test records a short clip and plays it straight back to you inside your own browser — it's never uploaded, saved to a server, or seen by anyone else. Your test results work the same way: they exist only on your screen for that session, which is also why the "Copy Summary" button on the report is there — so you can save your own results somewhere if you want them later.

Always start at 50–60% and nudge up from there. Listening loud for even 30 minutes a day accelerates long-term hearing loss — and ironically, fatigued ears miss detail that a rested pair at moderate volume would catch easily.

Get the fit right before judging the sound
A loose earbud tip or an over-ear cup that doesn't seal properly kills bass and clarity before the driver even gets a chance. Try different ear tip sizes for IEMs, or adjust the headband so the cups sit flush — a proper seal can sound like a hardware upgrade.

Use EQ sparingly — cut before you boost
If something sounds harsh or muddy, try reducing the problem frequency rather than cranking the opposite end up. Boosting adds distortion and can clip your audio chain; cutting is cleaner and usually gets you there with less collateral damage.

Clean your headphones regularly
Earwax and dust on ear tips or driver grilles physically block sound and dull high frequencies over time. A dry cotton swab on the mesh and a damp cloth on ear pads every few weeks keeps your headphones sounding like they did out of the box.
